What is a passing grade in the Philadelphia School District? ›

Notes: Students whose final average falls below a 60 will receive an “F” on the final report card. Benchmark Assessments are not a part of the report card grade. They are used as formative assessments to guide instruction.

In 2021-22, the Philadelphia citywide on-time four-year graduation rate was 75.4%, a small increase from the 2020-21 rate of 75%. In 2021-22, the graduation rate was 85.5% for Charter schools, 78.5% for District schools, 18% for Alternative schools, and 71.2% for District and Alternative schools combined.

U.S. Letter Grading System: The standard grading system in the U.S. uses letters A to F, with A being the highest (90-100%) and D being the lowest passing grade (60-69%).

You'll usually need to receive a letter grade between A and D to pass a class, often the numerical equivalent of 65 percent or higher. Receiving an F—which stands for “fail”—indicates that you did not pass the class. The cutoff to receive an F is usually 64 percent.

School will start after Labor Day -- on Sept. 5 -- a change from previous years' start dates at the end of August. To account for the change, students are going to observe in-school days of learning, instead of having a day off on holidays such as Indigenous Peoples Day and Veterans Day.

Numerical and letter grades

In primary and secondary schools, a D is usually the lowest passing grade. However, there are some schools that consider a C the lowest passing grade, so the general standard is that anything below a 60% or 70% is failing, depending on the grading scale.

Less than 80% ( a B) is considered failing and you have to do remediation. A GPA less than 3.0 (between 2.99-2.70) is a letter of concern. Two of these means dismissal GPA below 2.70 is probation and GPA even less is dismissal. An F during didactic is also dismissal.

C is anywhere between 70% and 79% D - this is still a passing grade, and it's between 59% and 69% F - this is a failing grade.
